Color
Salmon naturally eat lots of crustaceans and shrimp which gives them the beautiful pink color. Farm raised salmon has to be dyed, otherwise it would be grey in color. You can naturally spot farm-raised salmon is light orange or light pink. Wild will be a really nice deep-red hue. Most stores will also label farm-raised salmon and wild salmon.
PCB’s
Farm raised salmon are often contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) at levels that raise health concerns. PCB’s are one of the top ten “dirty dozen” carcinogens.
Feed
Farm raised salmon are commonly fed corn or soy meal with ground up fish. I stay away from GMO’s and I certainly don’t want to eat an animal that is being fed GMOs.
Antibiotics
Because farm raised salmon are in contained areas, farm raised salmon are given antibiotics. I don’t know about you, but I certainly want to be eating antibiotics!
Lower Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Farm raised salmon have lower Omega-3 fatty acids (the good fats we need).
